The Necessity of Warmth

On nights like tonight
The cold creeping in
Fingers numb
Jaw taut
The air holds still
Glass fogged
Nose runs
Walls damp
The clear-black sky surrounds
Sharp cough
Breath mist
Icicles fall
The sound of creaking
Empty mugs
Torn tissues
Huddled tight
The cupboards emphatically empty
Washed clothes
Hang frosted
Steel wool
The necessity of warmth
Etched deep into bone marrow
